Open Science in Astronomy

Communauté

Contact : Mark Allen (mark.allen@astro.unistra.fr); Franck Le Petit (Franck.LePetit@obspm.fr)

Astronomy is in many ways at the forefront of data sharing, with long term efforts for the development and use of community-based interoperability standards, sharing of software codes, and the support of services for bibliographic and reference data. The field is however currently undergoing rapid changes that are being driven by the growth in data volume and complexity, the new challenges of multi-messenger and time-domain astronomy, as well as new technologies and evolutions of the methods for publication of articles, code and data.

Astronomy data sharing systems are also now being integrated in the new Open Science initiatives that have been established at the national level with Recherche Data Gouv, and at the European level with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). Open Science entails making research (including publications, data, and software) accessible for professional, amateur, educational and societal uses, and has the potential of making the scientific process more transparent, inclusive and democratic.  In practice open science involves the application of FAIR principles for data sharing so that the data and services are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable.

This workshop will cover a wide range of topics related to Open Science in astronomy. It is intended to inform researchers about the latest developments in data sharing and interoperable data and tools. The workshop will be useful to astrophysicists who wish to publish data, and to learn about new tools and new functionalities that will facilitate their work. We will also engage the community in a discussion of the future developments and opportunities.

The workshop will be organised around two sessions, with each of the sessions being structured around one or two invited presentations of about 20 minutes followed by contributed and demonstration presentations of new scientific capabilities of 10 to 15 minutes by the community.

The workshop being in full-hybrid mode, all the presentations must use the computer running the hybrid mode. Presentations that will be selected will need to be uploaded on this computer. For demonstration presentations, please contact the SOC of this session at soc_s04@sf2a.eu if you need any particular software on the computer.
